Departure from a place or departure from life, a group of ten international artists explores the relationship to borders, both human and geographical, that exists between what is left behind and what is waiting ahead. There is always the other side of a border, for those leaving, others are staying.
Departures is in relation to the hope, the re-birth, and the fear of the unknown. Somewhere or nowhere, the dream or the nightmare, it is about being ready to go, or to let go. The artists, whose works were chosen for this exhibition, have each found themselves profoundly engaged with the transient aspect of life. Through their work, they explore the contradictions between our desire to leave and the fear for the arrival. The exhibit expresses the quest for others’ traces to find a direction to go, and the traces left to remind us the path we have taken. In the complexity of life, as we reach the limits that we have set for our comfort, we are brought back to our own fragility. 2007 French Cultures Festival official event. |
